This 17.7 meter statue is one of the sacred places of the Jain religion, built in the 12th century. The statue represents the motionless ascetic in meditation which begins to be covered by vegetation. Gomateshvara, also called Bahubali, was the son of Rishabha, founder of Jainism. It is said that he remained to meditate, motionless, for one year in a standing posture (kayotsarga) and during this time, climbing plants grew around his legs.
